The Magic of Thinking Small?

"Whoever wants to reach a distant goal must take small steps." - Saul Bellow
What did you do today that will get you to where you want to be one year from now?
You know me. You know that I'm someone who usually thinks BIG. I come up with all types of elaborate ideas for my life. It's like I have this Dr. Evil "World -Domination!" complex!
Sometimes these ideas are so BIG that they overwhelm me! Have you ever felt that way?
Thinking big almost destroyed me.
"Derek, what are you talking about?"
When I was a youngen', reading and learning, all the 'know it all's' said, "One of the biggest keys to success is to think big."
Thinking big had me chasing my tail for 6 years. Thinking big had me involved in busines ventures I had no business being invoved in. Thinking big got me into a lot of debt.
I talk from my own experience, that's it. Maybe 'thinking big' has worked for others, but not me.
Listen, I'm all for having a vision and dream for your life. 100%. For years I thought big, big monthly, yearly goals and it was like crawling on hot coals. My progress was sloooww.
And then I got SO FED UP with 'thinking big' and 'big goals', I knew I had to do something else. So I did the opposite. I made my goals small. Tiny. My very first speech was given to my friend's youth AAU basketball team. There were 5 kids no older than 12 years old.
My next talk was to a group 15 of high school students. Then the next was to an audience of 35. As I developed my skill the listeners grew. Now I often speak to audiences of over 150 people. Do you see the progress?
Keep CELEBRATING your small victories. Oprah started with 1 viewer. Google started with 1 visitor. Sure, have a big AIM for your life, but start where you are.
Life teaches us about the law of growth. Do you know anyone who went from kindergarten to college? What's your goal for today, this week, this month? Begin. Now.
Ignite the POWER in you that begs to contribute. That begs to CREATE. That begs to SERVE. That begs to WIN.
Celebrating your small victories,
Derek
